Digital Media as a Coping Tool for Youth During Lockdowns
During the pandemic, digital media emerged as a lifeline for Filipino adolescents, fulfilling critical emotional, cognitive, and social needs. Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, online gaming, Discord, and other social networks provided a space for entertainment, social connection, and shared experiences, helping teens feel less isolated. Adolescents used these platforms not only to communicate with peers but also to explore interests, learn new skills, and participate in communities that mirrored real-world social interaction.
The combination of entertainment and connection gave youth an outlet to manage stress, regulate emotions, and maintain a sense of normalcy amidst prolonged uncertainty. At the same time, reliance on media reflected a shift in behavioral patterns, with teens spending extended periods online and sometimes struggling with time management or digital fatigue. Despite these challenges, digital engagement proved instrumental in fostering emotional support, sustaining social identity, and promoting resilience during a time when conventional social avenues were unavailable.
